UNILAG Faculty of Science Wins National Research Grant of ?50 Million
The University of Lagos Faculty of Science has been awarded a ?50 million research grant by TETFund to develop indigenous biotechnology solutions for agriculture.
The University of Lagos Faculty of Science has made history by securing the largest TETFund research grant ever awarded to a Lagos-based institution. The ?50 million grant will fund a 3-year research programme focused on developing drought-resistant crop varieties using Nigerian indigenous plant genetics.
The project, led by Professor Akin Durojaiye of the Department of Botany, will employ 12 postdoctoral researchers and 30 graduate students.
"This is a landmark moment for Nigerian biotechnology," said Prof. Durojaiye. "We are proving that world-class research can emerge from our institutions." The grant was officially presented at a ceremony attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education.
