ABU Zaria Students Develop Solar-Powered Water Purification System
Electrical Engineering students at Ahmadu Bello University built a low-cost solar-powered water treatment unit serving 500 people daily � now piloting in 3 Kaduna villages.
Four final-year electrical engineering students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria have developed a breakthrough water purification system powered entirely by solar energy. The device, named "AquaSolar NG", costs under ?180,000 to build and can treat up to 2,500 litres of contaminated water daily.
The team spent 18 months designing and testing the prototype. It is currently being piloted in three rural communities in Kaduna State where waterborne diseases account for over 40% of child mortality.
The project has attracted attention from UNICEF Nigeria and the Ministry of Water Resources. The students have filed for a provisional patent and are seeking seed funding of ?5 million to begin commercial production.
